Selecting a Playtime Outfit

What To Do With Old Hair Accessories?

They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. But who’s to say your “trash” can’t become your own treasure?

As trends come and go in fashion, we are often left with a pile of old stuff that we’d probably never wear again and may have regretted buying in the first place. Among them are hair accessories, especially for us girls.

Whatever long-lost accessory you may have unearthed---it could be that peacock feather headpiece you dressed up with for a Halloween party 3 years ago or the beaded pearl headband you wore as a bridesmaid for your cousin’s wedding---you’re sure to have the following questions in mind: “Is it still in good condition (no missing or broken parts?”, “When and where else can I wear it?” and “Am I confident that it’s stylish enough?”.

Now, answering positively to those questions is a rarity. When the negative side of your inner debate wins, you most likely decide to get rid of your old hair accessories right away. Instead of throwing them out, you can try recycling.

Good thing green is always in now! Dust off your old hair clips and bows and breathe life into them by providing them with brand-new functions. If you can’t be bothered with glueing fasteners on clips or sewing fallen sequins back in place, here’s what you can do:

Brooch. Use a metal pin back to transform an old jeweled hair clip into a vintage-looking brooch and pin them on your solid-colored clutch for that extra pizzazz on a special night out. Just take out the parts that are still intact i.e. beads, sequins, rhinestones, etc. and decorate them on your plain battered belt buckle and voila, it’ll be fab and glam in no time.

Cocktail Ring. Cute and quirky plastic cocktail rings are all the rage among young women and little girls today. Popular ones are animal-inspired so if you have an old hair clip with an animal face or figure, you’re in luck! Designs featuring fruits and cupcakes are also pretty popular.

Scrapbook Supplies. The easiest of them all, this project will work well with any old hair accessory out there, even highly recommended for those with rusting metal fasteners. Simply remove the fasteners, thread or glue and have them stand on their own as ornaments. Design as you please on your scrapbook masterpiece.

Recycling is definitely one of the neatest ways to put used hair accessories to good use. You may even give them as gifts to your friends and family. Remember, you don’t have to be a handyman to do a little DIY. You don’t have to be an artist either to engage in arts and crafts. You just need an open mind and a good heart. Doesn’t it feel good knowing that your helping Mother Earth too?

5 More Minutes - Hair Rescue!

There are days when your bed just seems to be beckoning you to sleep in. And you say to yourself, “Okay, five more minutes,” only to wake up a full hour later! What do you do when you’re running late and you barely have time to pull yourself together? Well, you will have to figure out how to breeze through the shower and squeeze in a bit of breakfast. But you can leave your bed-head woes to us! We have some style tricks to make you look effortlessly chic:

The Basics

• The ultimate time-saver is to shower in the evening so that you can let your hair air-dry overnight and just do little tweaks in styling the next morning.

• Always in a rush? Keep dry shampoos handy! Use these when you have to skip the shower to keep your hair clean, fresh and non-greasy throughout the day.

• For a no-fuss way of hiding less-than-perfect hair, no matter what the length or cut, headbands are your best friends. Choose gorgeous designs, like No Slippy Hair Clippy’s headbands! Here’s one of my favorites!

If you really MUST shower, here are quick tricks:

For Short Hair

The great thing about short hair is that it looks just as good when it’s a bit messy! Go for an elegantly disheveled look. Apply pomade to damp hair and for a bit of movement, spritz on a light hair spray and then allow to air-dry.

For Shoulder-Length Hair

Hair at this length is easier to style than you think! A chic go-to hairstyle is a sexy sideswipe. After you shower, apply a leave-in treatment on your tresses to keep it shiny and tangle-free. Then take a section of your hair from the crown and pull to the side. Fasten into place with your favorite hair clippy. Mist with hair spray and voila: you’re out the door to wow everyone!

For Long Hair

Unwashed hair? Perfect! You can easily pull off a half-up, half-down hairstyle. Run a little mousse through your hair. Make a deep side part and then pull the front section backwards loosely. Do the same to the other side and then fasten with a cute hair clip. End with a little styling cream and to give it a feminine finish, pull your loose hair over your shoulders.

If you want a little more polish, then go for a simple braid. A braid is the hairstyle of the moment and it cannot be any easier to do! Start braiding towards the middle of your head and then pull to the side, towards your shoulder, for a French-braid effect.

Straight Hair

Curly Hair
Relax your curls by applying a dime-size amount of serum while hair is dry. Go over two-inch sections of your hair with a large-barrel curling iron. Top with a chic headband and get ready to steal the show!

Wavy Hair
Scrunch a golf ball-size amount of a curl-defining mousse into damp hair. Dry with a diffuser. Then put on your favorite headband and get some heads turning.

Relaxed Hair
If you have had your hair relaxed, protect your strands by spritzing a heat-styling spray onto dry hair. Wrap one-inch sections of your hair around a one-inch-barrel curling iron. After 30 seconds, unwind the strands and then repeat until you have gone through the rest of your strands. Finish off with a fashionable headband.
