Retro Hairstyles for Today's Modern Woman

(Since we just featured hairstyles of young Hollywood’s up-and-coming It girls, it just seems fair to look back at hairstyles of classic style icons of the past.)

On January 11, 1935, Amelia Earhart became the first person (man or woman) to fly solo across the Pacific. In honor of her pioneering spirit, let’s look at some hairstyles from the past that are still chic and appropriate for today’s modern woman.

There is a reason why Audrey Hepburn is such a fashion icon – her timeless beauty and her classic sense of style are as pretty and relevant today as they were 50 years ago. Copy her classic high pony for an elegant, understated look. Accent it with the Bridget hair bow, a 1 ¾” grosgrain boutique style baby bow on a pinch clip. The Bridget is available in cream, lavender, white, pink, shocking pink, and red.

Amelia Earhart’s short, spunky, fuss-free hairdo is a boon for busy, working moms (and female aviators!) everywhere. Use the Retro Dots Clipettes Prints to keep short pieces of hair off your face. The Retro Dots Clipette is a brown ribbon with pink and green retro dots.

Brigitte Bardot’s long, messy bedhead is still as fashionable today as it was 50 years ago. Pin back stray tresses with the Devyn, a color block grosgrain bow. This 3 ½” sequin/silk organza bow on a pinch clip is available in bubblegum and light blue.

Sophia Loren’s ‘do might seem a bit dated, but a little less teasing at the crown would make this a more modern 'do. Instead of an animal print fur coat, highlight your look with the Tatum bow. The Tatum is a 2” grosgrain animal print baby bow with tails. It is available in black zebra, light brown giraffe and dark brown leopard.

Stylish Baby on a Budget

In these tough economic times, budgetary constraints can shift our spending focus to basics such as food, shelter, and education, rather than fashion.

This is understandable, and not all parents are able to buy new baby clothes as often as they’d like. Young kids with older siblings often benefit from hand-me-downs. No worries here, because smart moms know how to re-work old clothes into new outfits by mixing and matching separates.

Another way that budget-savvy moms can spruce up old clothes is with some smart accessorizing. One way of doing this is with fashionable Clipettes – the most budget-friendly items in the Hair Clippy collection.

Clipettes® Prints come in many different designs, each one creating a different look for your little girl:

The Argyle Print makes even a plain hand-me-down look preppy and new.
The playful Leopard Print Clipette® creates a cute jungle vibe, especially when worn with another animal print accessory.
The Peace Signs Clipette® evokes a cool, hippie effect, perfect with a tie-dyed baby romper.
Cute, budget-friendly fashions, care of Hair Clippy Clipettes, are a small ray of light in these tough economic times.

Frizz-Free Hairstyles

Hello hot weather, hello frizzy hair!

Summer means lots of wonderful outdoor activities for you and your daughter, but it’s also definitely the frizziest time of the year, and if you don’t care for her hair, the dreaded frizz can set in, in no time! What causes hair frizz? Three things: Heat, humidity and constant hair touching!

For the first two, a simple shower and shampoo combo is often the best solution, but constant hair touching is a little trickier to solve. You’ll have to choose hairstyles that keep her locks in place all day, so she won’t have to run her hands through her hair to move stray hairs out of the way.

To get you started, I picked out three cute and effortless styles that can help reduce self-inflicted frizz to a minimum.

Side-Clipped Bangs

There’s no stopping your daughter from playing a little hopscotch with the neighborhood kids, but you can keep her hair in perfect place with a pair of Dannielynn bow clips, making sure she won’t need to fix her bangs with every skip and jump. These beautiful polka dot bows come in three colored pairings, including purple on pink, red on lavender and shocking pink on sea foam.

The Classic Headband Look

Perfect for a windy day on a fairground carousel, hold her hair firmly in place with the bubblegum cute Cory headband, made in white organdy fabric.

Pulled Back Bow

With the right styling, difficult to control longer hair can be far easier to manage than you might imagine. A simple pulled back look using our Fiona clipette™ bow, for example, reins in those pesky loose locks and looks more casual and elegant than a low ponytail.

If all goes well, these easy tips will help keep the summer frizz at bay. Be sure to visit the No Slippy Hair Clippy® store for more hair accessories!

Pretty in Polka Dot

Themed parties can range from the more traditional Dress in Pink variety to the more exotic African Safari, now you can hit the sweet spot between these two extremes with the quirky, classic Polka Dot theme party!

Easy to organize and decidedly fun, the Polka Dot theme party is making a comeback after first exploding in popularity in 2006. This time around, the focus is less on polka dot pencil skirts and scarves and more on eye-catching accessories.

Invest in a few choice hair pieces from No Slippy Hair Clippy® and your little girl will surely be the prettiest of the polka dot princesses this year.

The Dottie baby bow gives off an irresistible charm, with polka dots all over, covering even the bold bow knot center. It comes in a variety of two-toned colors and can be worn as a single accessory near the temple, clipping the bangs neatly to the side to better frame that cute little face, or you can use them in pairs to adorn pigtails and other similar styles.

The slightly asymmetrical Mimi baby bow shares similarities with the Dottie design, but offers a softer, more butterfly-like bow shape. The center knot is thinner and scrunched tighter, highlighted in an identical color to the polka dots covering its surface. The Mimi baby bow looks great on braids and long ponytails.

The Mimi headband does wonders for short bobs and shoulder-length locks, adding a dash of spice and joyous fun to the occasion. The grosgrain band is soft to the touch and won’t snag your daughter’s hair, and is comfortable enough to be worn all day with absolutely no hassle.

For a completely different look, the Clipettes Prints - Dots™ collection is sure to dazzle with its bright color palettes. Each clipette pairs two shades of pink dots against a background of lime or turquoise, throwing the dots into brilliant contrast. The different colored accents also give your daughter more choices when planning a coordinated party ensemble.

Now you have the tools, so be sure to have a blast with your Polka Dot party!

Baby Bonding Activity: Play Easter Dress-Up!

Bunnies, eggs and jellybeans—everything Easter’s surely in the air!

The Easter holidays are the perfect excuse for a little family fun, hunting for painted eggs and lounging in garden chairs after a wonderful brunch. For you and your little ones, Easter can be a magical bonding time and made all the more memorable by some choice hair accessories from No Slippy Hair Clippy.

Candy-Colored Clipettes for Babies
Our candy-colored clipettes are just the right choice for little ones with a sweet tooth.

The popular Dots clipettes come in a range of beautiful pastel colors and have a non-slip grip designed to keep your baby’s hair comfortably in place all day. The round shapes evoke the bright-colored eggs so popular during this time of year, and you can choose from a selection of colors ranging from Turquoise to Lime (both in picture) and even classic White.

The bunny is another enduring symbol of Easter, and you can have this cuddly animal accompany your baby at all times. Choose between two cute designs: The Bunny pinch clip (above left) which shows a white bewhiskered wabbit, or the Alisha pinch clip (above right) which has a felt stitch bunny face in citron pink.

Easter Hair Accessories for Mommies
Speaking of the Easter bunny, do you know why most of them are colored pink? According to tradition, pink signifies a fresh beginning.

As the mother of a beautiful baby, wearing pink hair accessories can be your way of celebrating the arrival of your baby girl into the world.

The Emily bow (above) is a sweet shade of light pink that looks splendid on light or dark hair.

A sparkly option is the Heather headband, which has a multi-layer flower, gilded with sequins and beads. It comes in both shocking pink (in picture) and white.

It doesn’t matter if your hair is curly, wavy, or straight—our clips and headbands are comfortable, and they just work!

The No Slippy Hair Clippy store also has many more hair accessories for babies and their mothers – check them out and you may find more beautiful pairings for Easter!

Red Carpet Hair Accessories Worthy of the Oscars

The Academy Awards Ceremony, also known as the Oscars, is one of the most glamorous events in the world.

Stunning actresses like Natalie Portman and Nicole Kidman will grace the event this year, and we’ll all spend hours watching them walk down the red carpet in dazzling designer dresses with picture-perfect hair.

Though we might only dream of wearing hundred-thousand-dollar gowns, we can still get a little bit of that same special Oscar glamour wearing the right hair accessories.

Best Actress nominee Michelle Williams (top image), for example, sports short platinum blond hair that would look fantastic in a headband or with clippettes ribbon prints. While the Blue Valentine star might choose a bejeweled ornament to go with her dress, your pixie cut toddler can look just as adorable in a glittering Kaitlin pinch clip or an elegant Alyssa bow (bottom image).

Best Supporting Actress nominee and True Grit breakout star Hailee Steinfeld (top image) is one of the youngest actresses ever in the running for an Oscar at only 14 years old, but she already exudes lady-like sophistication. She has long straight hair that she likes to tie in a neat ponytail, a style that your daughter can definitely pull off with a cute striped clipette or a slightly more whimsical Kaia clip (bottom image).

Who could forget Rubina Ali (above left), star of the Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire? In 2009, she charmed millions around the world with her precious smile. Rubina attended the ceremonies wearing a headband that matched her periwinkle dress and ballet flats. The Mimi headband and Cory headband are great choices if you want to emulate this classic princess look.

No Slippy Hair Clippy offers hundreds of hair accessories, and makes dressing up  as enchanting as Hollywood's favorite night!  Can’t wait to watch the Oscars!

Lovely Valentines Day!

Valentine’s Day is a day when couples celebrate their affection for each other, but why let them have all the fun?

Valentines day  is the perfect occasion to share the love by wearing hair accessories that would make Cupid himself fall in love. Here are a few classic choices from the award-winning No Slippy Hair Clippy line:

Head-Turning Tykes

For your babies and toddlers, a bright splash of Valentine red would look lovely. The Haley Mini Grosgrain Baby Bow® comes in the cutest shades of rose red and shocking pink, guaranteed to make heads turn!

The Ava Headband in red or hot pink is a popular pick because of its comfortable ruffle band and soft design that compliments baby’s dresses and toddler’s blouses.

Cute and Cheeky Girls

If your young girl is craving a cute accessory, she will adore the Rachel pinch clip, which comes in four Valentine hues: maroon, pink, red and scarlet. The layered satin and velvet ribbons are sure to make her look pretty and feel confident at school card-giving festivities.

Hippy chic can also be adorable, as you’ll find out when your girl wears the Brenda Hearts “LOVE” clip in bubblegum pink. It’s the perfect accessory for that confident, spunky daughter who’s not afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve or, in this case, her hair.

Trendy and Pretty Ladies

Teenagers on the cusp of dating will look even prettier with the trendy Valentines Clipette™ that bears the XOXO sign-off popularized on the hit TV show Gossip Girl.

Now that everyone’s got their own hair accessories for Valentine’s Day, don’t forget about yourself, mom! Channel the halcyon days of your youth and sport a pretty Nikki Headband, whose flower with yellow center design looks great with long straight hair or shoulder-length curly hair.

Valentine’s Day is truly a special day when you and your children can show your love for each other. Wearing cute hair accessories just makes the celebrations all the more memorable.

Happy V-Day from No Slippy Hair Clippy!

Ask Annie!

Audrey from Chicago wrote:

Hello Annie,

My husband and I just enrolled our 10-year old daughter in a private school for girls. So far, she’s been adjusting really well…except for the uniform. She loves accessorizing but the school has a strict policy about this. Only a watch, white socks, clear nail polish, stud type earrings and simple black or white hair accessories are allowed. She’s not too happy with what she calls “boring not-color colors” on her hair. Do you have suggestions on fun black and white hair accessories?

I know that girls her age tend to go for accessories with bursts of color like fuchsia and turquoise, for example. But rules are rules. It’s good to hear that she’s a fan of accessories even when her options are limited.

Jeweled, feathered and ruffled hair accessories are definitely out of the question, even if they come in black or white. They are too distracting and flashy for a 10 year-old girl. I would not recommend black or white sequined headbands either. They may not be too dressy for some but they’re more appropriate to wear for a party rather than school.

I would recommend black and white polka-dotted, striped or checkered hair accessories but those designs are still pretty basic. My top suggestion? Animal prints!

Pictured below is No Slippy Hair Clippy’s Zebra print hair clip.

It’s from Clipettes™, our adorable modern hair clip line that ranges from $2.95 to $4.95. Fully lined in grosgrain and measuring at 1-3/4", this stylish, school-board approved clip is just the thing for your daughter!

Apart from the unique design, what’s interesting is that this clip is playful yet subtle. There’s no doubt your daughter will love it, Audrey :)
