5 More Minutes - Hair Rescue!

There are days when your bed just seems to be beckoning you to sleep in. And you say to yourself, “Okay, five more minutes,” only to wake up a full hour later! What do you do when you’re running late and you barely have time to pull yourself together? Well, you will have to figure out how to breeze through the shower and squeeze in a bit of breakfast. But you can leave your bed-head woes to us! We have some style tricks to make you look effortlessly chic:

The Basics
• The ultimate time-saver is to shower in the evening so that you can let your hair air-dry overnight and just do little tweaks in styling the next morning.
• Always in a rush? Keep dry shampoos handy! Use these when you have to skip the shower to keep your hair clean, fresh and non-greasy throughout the day.
• For a no-fuss way of hiding less-than-perfect hair, no matter what the length or cut, headbands are your best friends. Choose gorgeous designs, like No Slippy Hair Clippy’s headbands! Here’s one of my favorites!

If you really MUST shower, here are quick tricks:

For Short Hair
The great thing about short hair is that it looks just as good when it’s a bit messy! Go for an elegantly disheveled look. Apply pomade to damp hair and for a bit of movement, spritz on a light hair spray and then allow to air-dry.

For Shoulder-Length Hair
Hair at this length is easier to style than you think! A chic go-to hairstyle is a sexy sideswipe. After you shower, apply a leave-in treatment on your tresses to keep it shiny and tangle-free. Then take a section of your hair from the crown and pull to the side. Fasten into place with your favorite hair clippy. Mist with hair spray and voila: you’re out the door to wow everyone!

For Long Hair
Unwashed hair? Perfect! You can easily pull off a half-up, half-down hairstyle. Run a little mousse through your hair. Make a deep side part and then pull the front section backwards loosely. Do the same to the other side and then fasten with a cute hair clip. End with a little styling cream and to give it a feminine finish, pull your loose hair over your shoulders.

If you want a little more polish, then go for a simple braid. A braid is the hairstyle of the moment and it cannot be any easier to do! Start braiding towards the middle of your head and then pull to the side, towards your shoulder, for a French-braid effect.

It’s Time for a Hair Repair!

Believe it or not, gorgeous locks are never too far out of reach. You just need to get your hair in good health and soon you’ll be flaunting shinier, healthier hair in no time… Flash back to “The Breck Girls!” But first things first: lose the bad hair habits!

Among the most common hair nightmares are frizz, breakage and damage. These problems do not just pop out of nowhere. The way we treat our hair is oftentimes the very cause of our bad-hair-days. Here are some suggestions to help break those bad hair-habits and get better results.

Problem: Too Much Heat
When your blow-dryer is too hot, it can literally burn the surface of your hair! This will cause frizz and breakage.

Solution: Cool Down
On the surface, it may seem fine, but if it is giving off too much heat, then it's likely that its motor is already more than three or four years old. We suggest an ionic model. These models break down the size of water droplets to cut down drying time and to prevent hair damage. It is also important to give your hair a break from heat-styling. During these breaks, you can easily add flair to your locks by styling it with colorful hair accessories.

Problem: Split Ends
When you check your hair and see split ends, do you get tempted to pull the split apart so that it’s not obvious? The next time you feel this temptation, flee from it! You are only extending the split and this may lead to fly-away strands.

Solution: Cut it Out
The best solution to split ends is to cut the ends. See your stylist for a trim of at least half an inch every six weeks. Then in between your trims, use a few drops of anti-frizz serum on your hair’s ends to temporarily fuse the splits. One of my favorites is Bio-silk. It works great, and smells wonderful!

Problem: Knots Landing
When you comb your hair, it’s likely that you start from the roots and work down to the tips. You inevitably move any knots farther down the strands and make them bigger. This puts more stress on your hair and leads to breakage.

Solution: Upside Down
When combing your hair, try beginning at your ends and then work your way up to the roots. The key is to detangle a few inches at a time. For those extra nasty knots, mist on a leave-in conditioner and then gently detangle it using the point of a teasing comb.

Shampoo Smarter

The first step to healthy looking hair is to cleanse intelligently! No Slippy Hair Clippy shares these tips to gorgeous, healthy tresses.

Oftentimes, we take washing our hair for granted. It is such a normal part of our routine that we don’t really put much thought into it. However, did you know that a lazy wash can leave residue on your strands? This will leave your hair flat and lifeless. To get a healthy shine, try the following easy steps:

Soak up!
Make sure that your hair is thoroughly wet. With more water, you get more lather. This will help distribute the shampoo throughout the strands.

Rub-a-dub-dub
Before applying shampoo to your hair, rub it first between your palms. First massage at your nape and then spend time working it around your temples and hairline. These areas are often the oiliest and are unfortunately the ones that most people speed over. Afterwards, move on to other areas of your hair.

Happy Endings
Your hair produces its own natural oils. So it is no surprise that among the oiliest areas on your hair is at the root. When you wash your hair, it is likely that you concentrate on the roots, and that’s good. But don't ignore the ends! This is the oldest part of your hair and attracts the most dirt and product buildup. Pull up the ends of your hair and then massage with the rest of your tresses. Work into a lather for two to three minutes.

Bye Bye Bubbles
Rinse well! Lift your hair at the roots then tousle until the water runs clear and without bubbles. If any shampoo is left behind, your hair will look dull.

Repeat these four easy steps every other day. If your hair is oily or needs extra attention, you can do these daily. Add a little more pizzazz with hair accessories and then all that is left for you to do is to flaunt your healthy, bouncy locks!

Styling Tricks for Healthy Hair

Ever thought about the abuse our hair receives on a daily basis? It could be from strong shampoos and conditioners, harsh styling products, poor water quality, too much heat-styling, plus the sun and pollution once we go outside! The result? A bad-hair-day!

No Slippy Hair Clippy is on a mission to make the world prettier one girl at a time. So this week, it’s all about keeping hair healthy! To start things off, we are revealing the top styling tricks to make sure you have not just good-hair-days, but awesome hair days every day! These small but smart tricks are guaranteed to make a big difference in the health of your hair.

Detangle with care. Unknotting “bare” hair will only give you split ends or breakage. To make sure that the comb glides down your hair smoothly, apply leave-in conditioner or your usual styling product first.

Brush up. Not all hair brushes were created equal. The general rule is that the longer your hair is, the bigger the brush you need. Your hair brush’s bristles help distribute your hair’s natural oils and keep it lustrous from roots to tips. The type of brush that will work best for you will depend on the length of your hair. If you have shoulder-length or longer hair, round brushes are best. If you have shorter strands, go for a paddle.

Go easy on the heat. Your hair needs a vacation too! Limit blow-drying to twice a week only. Before switching on the heat, first wrap your wet hair in a towel for five minutes then air-dry for five minutes more. Doing these two things will not only minimize the damage from heat styling, it will also dramatically cut down your blow-drying time and help conserve electricity.

Change it up. Styling your hair into a ponytail all the time can cause breakage. Experiment on different hair styles. You don’t even have to go to extremes, simply put your ponytail a little higher or a little lower. Try a hair clip today and then a headband the next day. Remember, our hair clips are velvet lined, so they don’t break or damage hair. What’s important is that you avoid putting your hair accessories on the same spot all the time. This will help detour flatness and fly-away strands, and keep your hair healthy.

Do You Need a Hair Makeover?

How do you know when it’s already time to redo your hairdo? MarieClaire.com shares the top 10 signs that your tresses need some updating!

SIGN #1: Your hair has no volume.
It falls flat and no longer has body or movement, even after you’ve lovingly spent time to style it! This is a definite signs that you need a hair makeover, or at the very least, a trim.

SIGN #2: Your high school friends assure you that “you haven't changed a bit!”
Take it as a sign to do the exact opposite: change! If you can’t decide what cut you want, leaf through magazines and get inspired by the photos. Collect the images of the cuts you would consider. When you’re decided and ready, schedule a salon appointment and just go for it!

SIGN #3: Your highlights are more noticeable than your base color.
Your highlights may have become too heavy. Consider a single process to cover the streaks and lay off new highlights for at least three months.

SIGN #4: You're not receiving compliments on your hair anymore.
The easiest way to add instant pizzazz to ho-hum hair is by setting your strands in hot rollers for the softest, sexiest waves.

SIGN #5: Your hair and skin tone match.
Consider lowlights. Add deeper, warmer streaks using peroxide and ammonia-free color to give your look loads of dimension without damaging your hair.

SIGN #6: Your clothes have evolved; your hair hasn't.
When you update your clothing style, it’s the perfect time to update your hairdo as well. This way, your new look will literally work from head to toe!

SIGN #7: Two words: Brillo pad.
Marie Claire suggests that lopping off significant length may be the only way to eliminate dryness. But in the meantime, switch to a cream-based styler to add moisture to your hair, which will render it more supple and less apt to break.

SIGN #8: You pull your hair into a ponytail all the time.
Give your locks some shape by getting bangs or layers. These will make you more excited to wear your hair down.

SIGN #9: You spend more than 20 minutes styling your hair.
This may mean that your cut is not making the most of your texture. If you have curly hair, consider getting long layers. If you have straight locks, get a blunt bob to give it a boost.

SIGN #10: Your stylist could cut your hair with her eyes closed.
We hate to break it to you, but you may need new eyes looking at your hair and new hands giving it the pizzazz it needs!

Hair Discipline 101 Part 2

A continuation of tips for how to get your hair to behave especially for this eventful back-to-school season!

Issue #3 Limp and Lifeless Hair

It’s hot and your hair shows it. It is important to note that you may need to swap your hair care products depending on the weather. When the hot seasons come in, you may have to say goodbye of your cold-weather regimen in favor of products that help your hair react better in the heat.

Solution: Go for hair products that are not oil-based or cream-based. These will only weigh your hair down and make it look even more limp and lifeless. Choose water-based volumizers to add the needed boost. You can also spritz on an anti-humidity hairspray at your roots and then blow-dry your hair into place.

If you're not so big on hair styling products, then make sure your shampoo and conditioner aren’t weighing your hair down. Avoid using too much shampoo; a little goes a long way. As for conditioners, limit use on the ponytail of your hair only. You scalp already produces natural oils and adding more oil might just weigh your hair down.

Issue #4 Highlight Problems

When you’re out in the sun too much, you may be over exposing your hair which can cause damage. If you have color-treated hair, the sun brings out unwanted warmth in your highlighted or lightened strands.

Solution: Use shampoos with blue or violet pigment to counteract yellow, red, and orange tones.

Issue #5 Green Hair!

No, this isn’t because you’re turning into the Hulk. It’s all thanks to all those trips to the pool last summer. Just as copper metal turns into a turquoise color from the oxidation process, chlorine reacts with the hard metals in the pool water and creates a similar effect. Your hair absorbs these metals and ends up giving your hair a greenish tinge.

Solution: Use a post-swim shampoo specially formulated to remove pool and hard-water buildup.

Hair Discipline 101 Part 1

Back-to-school season is here! Moms, are you ready? It’s back to crazy morning routines, hectic school activities and tons of homework and projects. And right in the middle of this storm is you!

When you get stressed out, so do your tresses. So before your hair starts throwing tantrums and turns frizzy, unruly, and unmanageable, here are a few tips that may calm down your unruly mane.

Issue #1 Frizzy Hair

As with any battle, if you must know your enemy. Then you can figure what tactics to use for the defeat. This battle with frizz will end in your favor if you understand what you are up against! When the outer layer of your hair (cuticle layer) opens and moisture gets in, your hair swells up. This is when frizz happens. It is oftentimes because of the layers of your hair get pushed in unnatural directions due to weather or poor hair care.

Solution: Before heading out, keep your hair hydrated by using a leave-in conditioner. Avoid heat-styling because high temperatures zap your hair of any moisture it has. If you really must heat-style, then keep flatiron and blow-dryer use to every two days.

Issue #2 Unruly Hair

The key is to work with your hair—not against it. Especially with curly hair, which tends to be a little more challenging to tame.

Solution: To help all the hair to move in the same way, use a flexible-hold gel and twist in the direction of the curls. Make sure your hair stays hydrated. Going for regular deep-conditioning treatments will also do wonders for your hair. On particularly humid days, keep your hands off your hair because less touching means more chances of your curls staying in place.

Got Gray?

What do you do at the first sign of gray hair? Do you accept it, hide it? No matter how you look at gray hair, it’s something we’ll all eventually have to face, no matter how young we are at heart! Here are some helpful tips from Marie Claire:

Caring for Gray Hair
Gray hair is gorgeous, pure refinement. But make sure you prevent it from yellowing! Preserve the subtle balance between salt and pepper by using iridescent shampoos and products.

For women who find that their gray hair tends to be wiry, dry, and brittle, the good news is that it can retain softness and manageability if you give it the right care. Hair experts recommend moisturizing, clarifying shampoos and conditioners, some of which are formulated for gray hair.

Go for regular deep conditioning treatments at your salon to keep hair healthy and moisturized. Scalp massage can also help stimulate hair follicles and increase blood flow to the scalp.

Lastly, don’t pluck! As tempting as it is to pull out that one gray strand that’s sticking out stubbornly, if you pluck hair, you run the risk of disrupting the hair cycle. This means you can lose that strand of hair for good!

Concealing Gray Hair
If you wish to hide the grays, you can go for tone-on-tone coloring. This adds subtleties to your color and makes the grays fade into the rest of your hair. If you have over 50% of gray hair, you can go for oxidation coloring. It is best to choose a color that is one or two shades lighter than your natural one.

Beautiful Updos for Busy Moms

Are you too busy to think about your hair? With the hectic schedules we lead, especially this back-to-school season, we sometimes limit the choices of our hair styles. We either pull it up, or wear it down, and nothing in between. Since it’s No Slippy’s mission to make the world prettier one girl at a time, we thought this week was perfect timing to share some hair tips that might inspire you to try a new hairstyle!

What we’re seeing is a lot of cool up-dos that are easy to do, and can take you from day-time chic to classy evening attire quite effortlessly. Looking fabulous all day and night, what a concept!

Braid ‘Em Up
Braids are all the rage everywhere, even celebrities and runway models are showing up in braids. And they can’t be any easier! Just braid your hair as you normally would, but for a stylish twist, braid slightly to the side so you can wear the braid out over your shoulder and then secure it with a pretty bow for an ultra feminine look.

Go Messy
This is your go-to hairdo for “no-time, stressed out” days because the messier it is, the better! Simply gather your hair loosely at the back of your neck with an elastic band or bobby pins. You can leave pieces out at front to frame your face.

You’ve Been Framed
If your hair is not long enough for an up-do, do some face-framing tricks. Pin your hair back at the nape of your neck with bobby pins. Keep it secure by arranging the bobby pins in an “X” fashion. This will make a low ponytail minus the elastic band. Then gently take away one side of your hair’s front section. Flat-iron that section so it dramatically frames your face. It may not stay up as long as the other up-dos, but it’s a high-fashion look that requires low effort.

Accessorize!
Almost any hair woe can be fixed with fashionable hair accessories. The simple addition of a headband to a low bun instantly adds character to the hairstyle. Try one of our No Slippy® clips or headbands! They’re sure to give extra pizzazz to any hairstyle!

Half and Half
If you have extra-thick hair, a half-up ‘do is a great choice. This will take a little more time, but the results are worth it! Apply a golf-ball-size amount of mousse on your hair and then blow-dry it until about 75% dry. Backcomb the hair at the crown of your head. Using a round brush, dry your hair the rest of the way through. Pin up the front section of your hair with bobby pins and then curl the ends.

Lopsided Bun
Here’s a fun twist to your good old bun. Pile your hair high, but instead of securing it with an elastic band, split the ponytail into two parts. Twist each part into the base of the ponytail and then secure.

These are all ideas that might give some flair back to your hair. Try one and see, you just never know until you try!

Hair Myths – Fact or Fiction?

1. Brush your hair 100 strokes each night
2.Trimming frequently allows hair to grow out faster.
3.Sleeping while your hair is wet will blind you.

So many myths, so little time! We’re attempting to get to the facts once and for all, with this compilation from Yahoo’s Shine Network.

Myth: Frequent trims make hair grow faster.
Fact: According to John Barrett, owner of the John Barrett Salon in New York City, "Hair grows a half-inch per month, whether you cut it or not." What a trim will do is eliminate split ends to make your hair look better.

Myth: Stress can make your hair fall out.
Fact: According to Gerome Litt, MD, assistant professor of dermatology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, it is possible to lose a few more strands when you're extremely stressed out. He adds, “Other culprits are pregnancy or antibiotics. After a few weeks, it will almost certainly grow back.” But, if you must know, your hair is already falling out all the time (about 50 to 120 strands per day).

Myth: Switching shampoos can make hair look healthier.
Fact:
According to hair and scalp expert Philip Kingsley, “Hair can't tell the difference between brands or build up tolerance to any product. Your favorite shampoo will work the same every time you lather up, week after week, month after month.”

Myth:
If you pluck out one gray hair, two or three will sprout in its place.
Fact:
The truth is, it’s false! However, plucking out those gray strands is a bad habit. You can damage the roots, cause infection or leave a scar.

Myth: You can't make flat, fine hair look full of body.
Fact: You can instantly add life to straight hair with just five minutes with a set of large hot rollers.

Myth: Rinsing with ice-cold water after a shampoo will give you shinier hair.
Fact: Not so. It might help perk you up for the morning, though.

Myth:
Coloring your hair causes major damage.
Fact:
Today, the market is teeming with hair products that are gentle enough not to weaken your hair. But Kingsley advises, “It can't hurt to consult a professional stylist the first time you do anything permanent to your hair or scalp.”

Myth: You should brush your hair 100 strokes every day.
Fact: According to Kingsley, “Brush it only to style it, because brushing pulls hairs out of their follicles and possibly weakens individual strands.”

Myth: You can mend split ends with the right products.
Fact: Sorry, but once they're split, that's it. You’re left with cutting them off. According to celebrity stylist Jimmy Paul, you can make split ends less noticeable by applying a product containing silicone or beeswax to temporarily seal ends together.

Myth: To get really clean hair, you must lather, rinse, and repeat.
Fact: One thorough washing will do the trick!
