Heat-Free Hair Can Be Fabulous

Moms, put away the curlers and flat irons.

Your daughters might damage their hair when they keep using these hot styling tools in summer. The hot sun already dries out her hair, and applied heat will only make it more dull and brittle.

Instead, let her switch to heat-free hairstyles like buns and braids. These two are very popular right now as summer hair, and I know they’ll look great on your girl as well.

Ballerina Band

Ballerina buns have always been a pretty and practical choice for summer since they keep the neck and face cool all day long. But when you add a headband to the plain bun, it becomes super chic.

Hairdo How-to:
  1. Wash and towel-dry hair. Brush through to remove the tangles.
  2. Using a brush, gather the hair and tie into a ponytail.
  3. Gather the ponytail end and twist until it becomes firm, but not too tight.
  4. Wrap the hair around the ponytail base. Use hair pins to steady the bun shape.
  5. Use a No Slippy Hair Clippy headband to finish the look!
Hailee Steinfeld, the teen star of True Grit, and actress Kate Mara have both worn this graceful combo down the red carpet, and let me say it’s the headband that really makes a difference.

To keep things fun, I recommend getting your daughter thin headbands with a pop of color like the No Slippy Hair Clippy® Casey or Mimi headbands. But if she’s a free spirit, then give her bold, thick headbands with like the Sage or Tonya headbands.

Braided Bow

Hailee goes two-for-two in the way she pulls off the braided bow, a summer look that can be interpreted in so many ways.

Here, she parts her hair to the side and then braids the lower two-thirds of her long, dark brown hair. Your daughter can follow this relaxed braid style with a clip bow to keep it all together, or go with tighter braids like those seen on the runways this summer.

Hairdo How-to:
  1. Wash and towel-dry hair.
  2. Gather hair at the nape of the neck. Divide hair into two sections (or more), depending on how intricate your braid will be.
  3. Take locks of hair from one section and cross from right to left, adding locks to the left section. Then, take locks of hair and cross from left to right, adding locks to the right section.
  4. Continue crossing hair and creating braids until a few inches from the hair tips.
  5. Secure the braid with a rubber band.
  6. Add a small clip bow to finish.
Your daughter’s choice of bow will show off her personality and style. She can go funky with the No Slippy Hair Clippy® Sam bow, or be prim and proper with the delicate Rachel or Audrey baby bows.

Cool Comfort, In and Out of the Crib

You might think a trusty old fan will do the trick, but your daughter needs a lot more to keep the prickly heat away. Here are a few suggestions on how to keep your little one cool and comfortable this summer season.

Tip 1: Keep her out of direct sunlight
Because she’s still so young, your baby hasn’t quite developed adequate natural protection from the sun. Always remember that direct exposure can quite quickly and easily lead to sunburn, and she’ll be feeling the effects long before you do.

Try to keep her indoors during the hottest times of the day, especially from 10 AM to 4 PM. You can take those lovely walks in the park in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun isn’t quite as high in sky.
However, if you absolutely must take her out with you to brunch, then a well covered stroller is a necessity. Check up on her frequently to see how she’s doing, and remember to keep her hydrated with lots of liquids.

Tip 2: Clothe her in breathable fabrics
When choosing baby clothes for summer, you can’t go wrong with soft, lightweight cotton, but go easy on the layers. Delicate knit fabrics are also a great choice because they absorb perspiration which helps prevent rashes caused by sweat.

Synthetic fibers are not as breathable, as cute as they may be, try to avoid clothes made using polyester. And don’t forget, larger neck openings and wider cuffs will make her outfits feel more airy and give her the freedom she needs to be mobile.

Tip 3: Give her the right hair accessories
Stay away from hats, caps and bonnets that tend to trap the heat, if you want to keep her head covered then go for wide-brimmed, loose knit fabric hats that breathe. If she’s going to be in a covered stroller most of the time, even better, you can ditch the hat and go for something cute.

Why not stick to all-purpose hair accessories that keep her head cool and have the added benefit of being careful on her hair while securing it in place? No Slippy Hair Clippy® offers adorable clips and headbands for any budget, featuring new, lower prices on many classics!

The Grace headband tidies up stray tufts of hair, keeping them in place with a soft ruffle band. The band stretches comfortably around your daughter’s head and the soft, smooth edges fit snugly and gently.

For a burst of color, consider the Tallulah flower, which features an embroidered flower design in warm shades like amethyst, olive and maroon.

No Slippy Hair Clippy® has a great selection of other baby and toddler hair accessories that keep hair neat and keep your daughter cool. Have a look around or leave a comment for more summer accessory-related advice!

Fun Clips for a Not Bummer Summer

There’s nothing like silver screen inspired, popcorn-powered summer matinee memories with your daughter. If you thought our recent Kung Fu Panda-inspired post was groovy, then you’ll love our ideas for making the best of the upcoming Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer, based on the popular series of books by Megan McDonald.

The film tells the unlikely story of spunky third grader Judy Moody, as she stumbles upon grand adventure in her very own neighborhood, despite the fact that she didn’t get to go on a jungle safari or to circus camp with her best friends.

What better message for your daughter than learning to have a Not Bummer Summer by choosing her own creative brand of fun!? And you know what’s guaranteed to make the day even more exciting?  No Slippy hair accessories that inspire her creativity! Here are a few of my personal favorites:

The Casey bow clip is an explosion of psychedelic, thrilladelic color that adds a little flair and spice.  As shown on actress Ryan Newman from the Disney TV show Zeek & Luther, wear them in identical bubblegum pink pairs as pigtails, or mix-and-match from the 4 different styles available at the No Slippy Hair Clippy® store.

Arts and crafts are a fantastic creative outlet for your daughter’s creative energy. Get her into the habit of making things with the Karielle clips, which come in three wonderfully cute designs. There’s the stitch-bordered heart clip (above) filled with flowers and a friendly smiley face, and multi-colored butterfly and flower clips for those days when only the cutest clips will do.

Remember, we have a whole section of fun hair accessories for your irrepressibly creative daughter. Let her choose her favorite clips and stave off the bummer summer!

The Power of the Cuddle

Babies are cuddle magnets, that’s a simple fact of life. They have that amazing ability to stop complete strangers in the street and turn visiting relatives’ arms into willing cribs!

Free cuddles are around every corner – and that’s a good thing! Some people believe that babies who enjoy more physical contact in the form of cuddles, hugs and kisses grow up to be more sociable and affectionate.

So if you want to give her all the positive attention she can handle, go ahead and dress her up in adorable accessories from No Slippy Hair Clippy®.

First on our list of sure caring cuddle boosters is the Dottie baby bow. This charming accessory attracts loving hugs with its bold polka dot design. You can even choose from among seven different colors, from the bright red wonder in this picture to shocking pink and classic navy.

Selma Hayek can’t keep her hands off her daughter Valentina, and who can blame her! Valentina’s sporting the lovely Lucy baby bow in bubblegum pink with white dots. This clip bow is intricately crocheted, and gives a punch of color and a dash of style to even the most basic of outfits.

Meanwhile, the Zoey headband is almost as precious as its newborn wearer... dawwww! The pink organza tufts highlight those rosy cheeks and serve as a wonderful compliment to patterned dresses. With this no-slip headband serving as an accent, she’ll win over the adoring crowd and create a long line of loving huggers.

Whatever accessories you may choose, just remember to give her as many cuddles, hugs and kisses as you can.

Frizz-Free Hairstyles

Hello hot weather, hello frizzy hair!

Summer means lots of wonderful outdoor activities for you and your daughter, but it’s also definitely the frizziest time of the year, and if you don’t care for her hair, the dreaded frizz can set in, in no time! What causes hair frizz? Three things: Heat, humidity and constant hair touching!

For the first two, a simple shower and shampoo combo is often the best solution, but constant hair touching is a little trickier to solve. You’ll have to choose hairstyles that keep her locks in place all day, so she won’t have to run her hands through her hair to move stray hairs out of the way.

To get you started, I picked out three cute and effortless styles that can help reduce self-inflicted frizz to a minimum.

Side-Clipped Bangs

There’s no stopping your daughter from playing a little hopscotch with the neighborhood kids, but you can keep her hair in perfect place with a pair of Dannielynn bow clips, making sure she won’t need to fix her bangs with every skip and jump. These beautiful polka dot bows come in three colored pairings, including purple on pink, red on lavender and shocking pink on sea foam.

The Classic Headband Look

Perfect for a windy day on a fairground carousel, hold her hair firmly in place with the bubblegum cute Cory headband, made in white organdy fabric.

Pulled Back Bow

With the right styling, difficult to control longer hair can be far easier to manage than you might imagine. A simple pulled back look using our Fiona clipette™ bow, for example, reins in those pesky loose locks and looks more casual and elegant than a low ponytail.

If all goes well, these easy tips will help keep the summer frizz at bay. Be sure to visit the No Slippy Hair Clippy® store for more hair accessories!
